Is it possible to select your thoughts just like you select your clothes?

You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivates.

I find this to be quite a profound statement. Imagine that - that you can select your thoughts the way you select your clothes each morning? It makes you realize how much power you have, really. And it's so true. There are a range of perspectives to look at any issue from, and it's really our choice which one we pick.


Many times, we just tend to submit to the narrative we think fits us. If something bad happens to us, we think we should be sad, we should be mad, we should feel sorry for ourselves.

We often don't quite realize that only we can decide how we actually want to internalize and respond to an event. Maybe something terrible did happen to you. But, is it making you better in the long-run? This is a lesson I'm still learning, but at such points we can make the decision to overcome weak thoughts and become powerful.

Sometimes I've made poor decisions or done something embarrassing, but none of those things matter as much as the story I tell myself afterwards. Do you find the same in your case?

Ultimately, the thoughts and sentiments I choose to hold on to, build my future. The outcomes depending on whether I choose to hold a healthy optimistic view, or a toxic pessimistic view are very, very different. I know which one I want to pick any day.

The clothing analogy is quite fitting. We pick clothes that make us look good. Do you know that you also wear your thoughts? The thoughts we choose to harbor affect the way we look to others, because our thoughts affect our actions and demeanor. But that's not even the most important part.

When we're wearing our favorite outfit, we also feel good. Same with thoughts. When we choose to pick the thoughts that align with our personal brand (not the default ones that stem from our insecurities) we feel good. We feel good for pushing past the negative thoughts that we struggle with. And it comes round full circle, because feeling good reaffirms the healthy mindset we've chosen.

We can decide what thoughts we will allow ourselves to focus on, and if we keep choosing brave thoughts, one day we'll actually believe them. In the beginning, you will be pushing those positive thoughts in by force, but one day they'll find their home there. You won't have to convince yourself; you'll really know that life is good and that you're going to be OK.

Our minds are breeding grounds for the decisions that create our outcome in life.
